Ellis Huggins started his racing career drag racing back in the late 1960s, where he had the distinction of holding two NHRA records. He drag raced at Savannah Dragway until 1977, when he found himself drawn to the excitement of round track racing.

He started racing at Oglethorpe Speedway in 1977 in the late model division, Oglethorpe's top class. After owning his own cars and driving cars owned by others with varying success, he finally went into semi-retirement in 1989. He moved to New Jersey to pursue other interests, but found himself back in Savannah in 1996, bitten by the dirt track bug again. He bought his first Street Stock in 1996, and again began racing at Oglethorpe Speedway.

He again won a few features, but had a few good runs shortened by car troubles varying from engine trouble to racing accidents. These troubles caused him to lose costly positions in the points standings. Although he was not faring well in the points chase, he was voted mechanic of the year by his peers at Oglethorpe, for his dedication to helping other racers.

In the year 2000, Ellis was crowned Oglethorpe Speedway's Street Stock Division Point Champion, and he also finished third in the Exide Shortrak Regional Standings.

Ellis has decided to move from dirt to asphalt in 2001. He will be competing full time at Hardeeville Motor Speeday in Hardeeville, SC. Hardeeville is a 1/3 mile asphalt banked oval that just opened in 2000. Ellis competed there on a limited basis last year, where he won 4 of the 7 features that he entered. Ellis is hoping to have continued success at Hardeeville.
